  24.             RLIN is the information management and retrieval  system  of
  25.             The  Research  Libraries  Group, Inc.  It includes an online
  26.             bibliographic database cataloging the holdings of well  over
  27.             one   hundred  research  libraries,  archives,  and  special
  28.             collections-a total of over forty million records in  August
  29.             1990.   Entries are divided among eight files:  books, seri-
  30.             als, archival materials (e.g., personal papers, governmental
  31.             records),  maps,  music  scores,  sound  recordings,  visual
  32.             materials (e.g., films and photographs), and computer files.
  33.             Smaller  subject-oriented  databases  contain  citations for
  34.             articles in art and architectural  periodicals;  eighteenth-
  35.             century  English-language  publications;  art sales catalogs
  36.             dating from the 1500s to the present; and  research  in  the
  37.             humanities  scheduled  for  publication  within the next two
  38.             years.

  40.             Users search RLIN with  command-line  searches  rather  than
  41.             from  a  menu, by specifying index terms.  Indexes available
  42.             include title, subject, author, conference  or  corporation,
  43.             ISBN,  LC  number,  and  many more; some are specific to the
  44.             file being searched (such as the index to music  publishers'
  45.             unique  numbers  on  sound  recordings  and scores).  Search
  46.             results can be further restricted by language, date of  pub-
  47.             lication, publisher, terms found in notes fields, etc.

  69.             RLIN is available to subscribers over the Internet.  It  can
  70.             also  be  dialed  into  through  the  public packet network,
  71.             SprintNet.  A private packet network supports RLIN users who
  72.             maintain entries in the database.

  77.                  For individuals:  $119 for 10 hours connect time
  78.                  For libraries:  $200 one-time start-up  fee  plus  per-

  83.             password,  descriptions  of RLIN and its files, step-by-step
  84.             directions for accessing the system, and assistance from the
  85.             RLIN  Information  Center via a toll-free service number: 1-
